INCIGHT Scholar Feature

INCIGHT Scholar Kelcie Laube is currently pursuing an Associates of Applied Science degree in Horse Management at Linn Benton Community College. She will graduate in the Spring of 2025 and plans to continue building upon her experiences working in the industry. She ultimately dreams about opening a horse stable one day to “share the joys she has found with a life around horses.” Kelcie was first introduced to horse-riding when she was only three months old. Her mother remembers the first time Kelcie was on a horse, as she giggled and laughed and didn’t want to get off. Horses have had a positive impact on Kelcie’s life; she finds “a lot of acceptance and freedom in the relationships that horses form with humans,” and she seeks to share this message with others.

Living and growing up in a more rural area, Kelcie often experiences being the first or second person with a disability someone has met. She says, “In my area, there are no well-known persons with disabilities in the horse industry.” Over the course of her educational career, Kelcie has taken the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience and develop the skills she will use in her future. Kelcie believes in “learning from the ground up.” This means she will be interning and also “looking for work either in farming retail or as a ranch hand” and working her way up to management.

This INCIGHT Scholar will graduate without student loan debt. This is in part due to INCIGHT’s scholarship and also because Kelcie has been diligent about taking on part-time work during the school year and full-time work in the summer. Kelcie credits some of her success to INCIGHT, saying, ”I’m not sure if I would have made it this far if I wasn’t an INCIGHT Scholar.” The team at INCIGHT is so proud of Kelcie’s accomplishments! We look forward to hearing more about her future achievements, and about her work of bringing the joy of horses into the lives of many while also expanding the mindset of what's possible within Oregon's horse industry..

The INCIGHT Scholarship is awarded to students from Oregon, Washington, or California who experience any disability and are pursuing a two- or four-year college, trade school, or certificate program. To learn more, please go to www.incight.org/scholarship.
